frost

This was taken with my smartphone. I was careful to place the sun behind the tree to prevent too much lens flare and therefore degradation of the image. This also has the effect of placing the shadows in the right spot. Flare is sometimes good but is fairly unpredictable so this time I chose to eliminated it. The figure at the top left serves to add scale and add some interest

Smartphones do not yet offer the best quality but it’s likely that you have one with you most of the time. I tailor my photography to whatever camera I have with me. Smartphones are also great for macro (close-up) shots – give me a rusty nail on some weathered wood and I’ll be there for ages. You can get incredibly close to your subject and the depth of field can be extreme

Happy (cold) shooting
